11 Session Tracks — AlgaEurope 2026
Abstracts evaluated on maturity, novelty, scientific contribution, quality, and audience relevance by blind peer review from both scientific and industrial committees.
AlgaEurope 2026 — Scientific Abstract Submission (Closed)
Abstract submission closed September 30, 2026. Acceptance notifications: week of October 27, 2026. Submissions evaluated by EABA scientific committee via 2–3 blind reviewers. Industry abstracts (5-min corporate slots) available exclusively to EABA members — 15 slots, first-come basis. Contact: info@dlg-benelux.com
#01
Physiology of Algae, New Species & Photosynthesis
Over 72,500 described algal species globally (Guiry, 2012); theoretical photosynthetic efficiency ~11%, commercial systems achieve ~3–5%. Metagenomic pipelines are accelerating novel species discovery at scale.
#02
Photobioreactors, Culture Monitoring & Microbiomes
Tubular and flat-panel PBRs achieve 20–50 g/m²/day under optimised PAR. Contamination by rotifers and competing microbes remains the primary scale-up failure mode in open raceway systems.
#03
Outdoor & Off-shore Production
North Sea offshore macroalgae pilots (e.g. SEAS6 consortium) target 10 t/ha/yr kelp yields without competing for land. EU Blue Bioeconomy Strategy identifies €500M+ sustainable offshore production potential.
#04
High-value Products
Astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis commands €2,000–7,000/kg (synthetic alternative: ~€1,000/kg). Phycocyanin (Spirulina) and omega-3 EPA/DHA from Thraustochytrids represent multi-billion euro global specialty markets.
#05
Feed Applications
Asparagopsis taxiformis in ruminant feed reduces enteric methane by up to 80% (Roque et al., 2021, PLOS ONE). Spirulina and Chlorella are authorised for EU aquafeed under Regulation (EC) 767/2009.
#06
Food Applications
Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) authorised as Novel Food under EU Regulation 2015/2283. Global microalgae food market projected at €1.3B by 2028. Consumer acceptance and texture engineering remain active research frontiers.
#07
Wastewater Treatment & CO₂ Sequestration
Microalgae fix ~1.8 kg CO₂ per kg dry biomass (Chisti, 2007). Algae-based tertiary wastewater polishing removes >90% residual N/P, meeting EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (91/271/EEC) thresholds.
#08
Biostimulants & Biocontrol
Seaweed extracts (Ecklonia maxima, Ascophyllum nodosum) regulated as biostimulants under EU Regulation 2019/1009 (effective July 2022). Field trials report 10–20% yield uplift in cereal crops; mode-of-action elucidation ongoing.
#09
Pharmaceuticals & Biomedical Applications
Fucoidan (brown algae polysaccharide) in Phase I/II trials for anti-tumour and antiviral activity. EFSA-approved alginates dominate wound dressing and encapsulation markets, with a global value of ~€2.7B. Microalgae nanocarriers under active development.
#10
Biorefinery, Circular Economy & Techno-economics
Cascaded extraction (lipids → pigments → proteins → biogas from residue) reduces production cost to <€3/kg dry biomass per published TEA models (Ruiz et al., 2016, Bioresource Technology). Full biomass valorisation remains the critical cost enabler.
#11
Molecular Engineering, Genetic Tools & Selection
CRISPR-Cas9 first demonstrated in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Jiang et al., 2014). Synthetic promoter libraries enable 20× lipid overproduction in engineered Nannochloropsis strains. EU GMO regulations govern environmental release.
